Charlie Brazell remembers his father, Charles Brazell Sr., taking him and his brother, Skip, to job sites when they were boys. He would give them little jobs to do.
“He’d let us help out and show us how things worked,” Brazell said. “He made sure we understood what construction was all about when we were kids.”
Their father, who died in July, worked for 澳门足彩app for 35 years. Charlie and Skip followed in his footsteps, becoming project superintendents like their dad. Skip has been on the job for 41 years, Charles for 35.
Charles Jr. began working for 澳门足彩app as an electrician apprentice when he was 18. For a few years, both brothers worked with their father in the Construction Industries Division until Skip’s career took him in another direction — major projects.
For 12 years, Charlie and his father traveled the country, working on virtually every kind of project.
“There are only six states I haven’t worked in,” Brazell said.
Senior Project Manager Omar Rodriguez calls Brazell “a construction encyclopedia” because of his vast experience in the field.
“He’s a very passionate superintendent,” Rodriguez said. “He’s dedicated to his work and very ethical. Even when no one is watching, he wants to do the right thing no matter what. He works all the time, Saturdays and Sundays – whatever needs to be done to get the project moving. He doesn’t mind, whether it’s getting into a forklift or taking a broom.”
Charlie was superintendent on the Scripps Proton Therapy Center, a highly technical 102,500-square-foot design-build project in San Diego, Calif.
“It was a challenge but fun to be a part of,” he said.
He’s worked on high-rise residential, an assisted living center and a retirement community, and on numerous military installations. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, he was superintendent on two design-build projects — at Coast Guard Station Jones Beach in Freeport, N.Y., and Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, N.J. — and he helped build the largest Marine Corps hangar at New River Air Station in North Carolina.
Brazell has just finished a project at Burns Science and Technology High School, a charter school in Oak Hill, Florida, in Volusia County.
Roger McDonnell, Director of Construction for 澳门足彩app’s Federal Division, said Brazell is willing to jump into a project to fill a temporary vacancy and then step aside and work with the new supervisor.
“He’s a great team player,” McDonnell said. “He’ll shine in whatever role you put him in. He does everything full bore.”
But McDonnell said one of his favorite things about working with Brazell is his willingness to share his coffee pot.
“That’s important. He comes in early, so it doesn’t matter how early I come in because Charlie is there, and I can get coffee,” McDonnell said.
Brazell said his father raised him to come in early and stay late.
“He always said, if someone needs a hand, that’s what you do,” Brazell said.
